DAY 04 : TAMAN AYUN, BEDUGUL, TANAH LOT TOUR ( B, L )

Breakfast at the hotel then get morning pick up from your hotel and enjoy a beautiful scenic drive along the island's mountains and highlands. On the way stop at the huge royal water temple of Taman Ayun, surrounded by a wide, elegant moat, was the main temple of the Mengwi kingdom.

Which survived until 1891, when it was conquered by the neighbouring kingdoms of Tabanan and Badung. The large, spacious temple was built in 1634 and extensively renovated in 1937. It's a spacious place to wander around, away from crowds.

The first courtyard is a large, open, grassy expanse and the inner courtyard has a multitude of meru (multitiered shrines). Lotus-blossoms fill the pools; the temple is part of the subak (complex rice-field irrigation system) sites recognised by Unesco in 2012.

From there, continue to visit Bedugul, a pleasant mountain village on Lake Bratan. Gain a fascinating insight into the culture of the real Bali as you visit the local Candi Kuning Market. While here, enjoy the array of fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, and exotic flora, including wild orchids and roses.

Afterward, we will take you to visit Ulun Danu Bratan Temple, set within the highlands of the mountainous Bedugul Regency in Bali, atop a plateau that sits on Lake Beratan. In the mild, mountain weather, approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, the air is crisp and cool.

The stunningly clear lake is calm and almost perfectly still, save for the soft breeze that occasionally sweeps across, creating tiny ripples upon its surface. A thin mist rises from the lake and hangs in the air, surrounding the temple, giving it a somewhat surreal appearance.

The area surrounding the temple is believed to have been a site of worship and center for religious rituals since the megalithic period. Despite its age, the temple remains clean and in good condition, well kept by the local community. Ulun Danu Temple is one of the icons of the island of Bali.

Your first stop is at the historic Puputan Square situated in the Denpasar’s city center. This busy gathering place is a favorite of locals and travelers alike, thanks to its mix of open space and intriguing monuments. Check out the memorial to the Balinese family, which commemorates the battle of the rajas of Badung against the invading Dutch army in 1906.

Continue from there to Bali’s Museum, just adjacent to the former royal palace. Wander the museum’s collection for around 30 to 40 minutes, admiring its range of artifacts covering everything from 20th century art to pre-historic times. The museum is also home to range of items celebrating Indonesian culture such as musical instruments, sculpture, theatrical masks, textiles and paintings. Keep your eyes out for exhibits dedicated to Balinese tooth filing as well as  marriage and cremation events.

Proceed next to the colorful Pasar Badung, a sprawling market where locals head to sell and bargain for everything from food to home goods. Continue the trip to Bajra Sandhi Monument is a major landmark in Denpasar Bali, a monument to the struggles of the Balinese people, set right in the centre of the Renon Square. The site is adjacent the Bali Governor’s office, and is hard to miss with its grand structure that resembles a Balinese Hindu priest’s praying bell, or ‘bajra’. Inside the base is a museum that displays various historical dioramas of the people’s past struggle for Independence.

There are three floors inside. The ground level lets you admire the typical Balinese architectural features applied to the overall structure, while the second floor is where most of the diagrams and dioramas that depict the Balinese people’s pre-history and history are shown. The last upper level provides you with soaring views over the green square and Denpasar’s cityscape afield.

The Bajra Sandhi Monument sits on a 4,900sqm plot within the vast 14.4Ha grounds of flat green lawns, gardens and palms of the square. Its contains 33 dioramas describing the history of the prehistoric (300,000 BC) that the humans are still moving and highly depends on the nature until the independence era (1950 – 1975) where the development of Bali are covering all aspects such as political, economic and social cultures.

Next to Sudirman Agung Mosque for Salat al-zuhr. This grand mosque is part of Bali’s Kodam Udayana military complex, right in Denpasar’s city center. The mosque is known for having the largest area size compared to other mosques on the island.

It also features a unique design, as the whole structure is virtually wall-less. This allows for natural ventilation and an airier feel during prayers, especially during tarawih and highlight events that draw devotees to its two levels.
