Penataran Ped Temple History

The Penataran Ped Temple is said to have a dark history. Apparently it was made as a place to worship the island’s protectors, the wong samar (holy people unseen by the normal eye). 500 of these wong samar were once controlled by an evil ruler, Ratu Gede Nusa, who with his black magic given to him by the leyaks (witches and shamans) spread disease and evil.

The Watu Renggong kingdom challenged Ratu Gede Nusa, also known as I Macaling, the human with an evil spirit. After many failed attempts, a Watu Renggong general came with the tooth of Naga Basuki, a dragon, slayed I Macaling and took hold of the island. The Pura Dalem Ped now worships these wong samar to keep them at bay, paying them respect in order to prevent further disease and pestilence from ravishing the island.
